    Body Changes

Understanding the physical shifts and learning to feel at home in your body again.

    If this sounds familiar...

    • You feel disconnected from your own body, like it belongs to someone else.
    • You're dealing with sudden weight shifts that don't respond to your usual routines.
    • Joint aches and stiffness have become a daily annoyance.
    • You're noticing changes in your skin, hair, and energy levels.

"You're not doing it wrong. Your body is just changing. Let's look at solutions available to you."

    The Body Betrayal

There is a specific kind of grief that comes when you look in the mirror and don't quite recognize the body looking back at you. For years, you knew how your body operated. You knew that if you ate a certain way or exercised a certain amount, your body would respond predictably. And then, peri-menopause arrives, and the rulebook is thrown out the window. Suddenly, there's a softness around your middle that wasn't there before, your joints ache when you get out of bed, and your favorite jeans feel like a medieval torture device. It can feel like a betrayal.

    Shifting the Narrative

But here is what my girlfriends and I have realized over endless cups of tea: our bodies aren't betraying us; they are transforming. They are doing exactly what they are biologically programmed to do in this season. The drop in estrogen changes where we store fat—moving it from our hips and thighs to our midsection. It affects our collagen production, changing our skin and hair. Fighting it with extreme diets and punishing workouts only increases our cortisol (stress hormone), which ironically makes the weight cling even harder.

How to Feel at Home Again

Learning to live comfortably in this new iteration of your body takes time, patience, and a whole lot of self-compassion. Here are the shifts that have helped me and so many others find peace.

    1. Ditch the Punishing Workouts

If you're still trying to do the high-intensity, hour-long cardio sessions you did in your 30s, you might be doing more harm than good. Our midlife bodies crave a different kind of movement. Strength training is no longer optional; it's essential for maintaining muscle mass and bone density. Pair heavy (but safe) lifting with gentle, restorative movement like yoga, Pilates, or long walks. Walking, especially in nature, is incredible for lowering cortisol and keeping your metabolism humming without stressing your system.

    2. Protein is Your New Best Friend

As our hormones shift, we become more insulin resistant, meaning our bodies don't process sugars and carbohydrates as efficiently as they used to. The secret weapon? Protein. Prioritizing protein at every meal helps stabilize blood sugar, keeps you full, and preserves that precious muscle mass. I stopped counting calories and started counting protein grams, aiming for at least 30 grams per meal, and it completely changed my energy levels and body composition.

    3. Hydration and Joint Care

That creakiness you feel in your knees and hips? Estrogen acts as a natural lubricant for our joints, so when it drops, things get stiff. Staying fiercely hydrated is step one. Step two is incorporating anti-inflammatory foods—think turmeric, ginger, and Omega-3s. A high-quality collagen supplement has also been a game-changer for many of us, helping with both joint comfort and keeping our skin feeling resilient.

    4. Buy the Bigger Jeans

I say this with so much love: stop squeezing into clothes that no longer fit. Keeping a closet full of "someday" clothes is a daily psychological punishment. Go buy a few beautiful, high-quality pieces that fit the body you have *today*. When your clothes fit well and feel comfortable, your confidence completely shifts. Dress the woman you are right now, because she is worthy of feeling beautiful and comfortable.
